What Are You Carrying?

There is a question God often brings to my heart whenever life feels overwhelming:

What are you carrying?

At first, I would immediately think about my responsibilities—work, ministry, family, deadlines, and the everyday demands of life. But as I sat quietly with the Lord, I realized He wasn’t asking about my schedule.

He was asking about my heart.

Sometimes we carry things we were never meant to carry. We carry yesterday’s disappointments into today’s opportunities. We carry words spoken over us years ago. We carry shame, guilt, grief, fear, rejection, and unrealistic expectations until they become so familiar that we mistake them for part of who we are.

The weight may not be visible to anyone else, but we feel it every day.

Jesus gives us a different invitation:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Notice that Jesus doesn’t ask us to become stronger before coming to Him. He simply invites us to come.

A Heart Check

When you begin feeling emotionally or spiritually heavy, take a moment to pause and prayerfully ask yourself these four questions.

1. What am I carrying?

Be honest.

Is it fear?

Grief?

Disappointment?

Bitterness?

The pressure to have everything together?

Healing begins when we stop pretending and start acknowledging what is really weighing us down.

Reflection: What burden immediately comes to mind?

2. How am I carrying it?

Sometimes the burden isn’t the only issue. The way we’re carrying it matters too.

Are you carrying it with anxiety?

With resentment?

With shame?

With self-reliance?

Or are you carrying it with faith, trusting God to walk with you through it?

Our posture often reveals more than our circumstances.

Reflection: How has this burden affected your thoughts, emotions, relationships, or decisions?

3. Why am I carrying it?

This question requires courage.

Has God asked you to carry this for a season?

Or have you continued carrying something He already told you to release?

Sometimes we carry things because we don’t know how to let them go.

Sometimes we carry them because they became part of our identity.

Sometimes we carry them because we’re afraid of what life will look like without them.

But healing invites us to exchange old burdens for God’s truth.

Reflection: Why have you continued carrying this weight?

4. How can I release it?

Releasing isn’t pretending it never happened.

It isn’t minimizing your pain.

It isn’t forgetting your story.

Releasing is choosing to place what is too heavy for you into the hands of the One who is able to carry it.

Sometimes release looks like prayer.

Sometimes it looks like forgiveness.

Sometimes it looks like setting healthy boundaries.

Sometimes it looks like asking for help.

Sometimes it simply begins with saying, “Lord, I don’t want to carry this anymore.”

Every step toward surrender is a step toward healing.

Prayer

Father,

Search my heart and reveal every burden I have been carrying that You never intended for me to bear. Give me the courage to be honest with You and with myself. Help me recognize what belongs in Your hands instead of mine.

Teach me to surrender fear, shame, disappointment, grief, and every weight that keeps me from walking in freedom. Replace every lie with Your truth, every burden with Your peace, and every wound with Your healing.

Today I choose to trust You with what I cannot carry alone.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Journal Prompt

Today, I will honestly answer these four questions:

  • What am I carrying?

  • How am I carrying it?

  • Why am I carrying it?

  • How can I release it?

Remember this:

Healing doesn’t always begin when life changes.

Sometimes healing begins the moment we become honest about what we’ve been carrying.
